About Erica

Marketing. Messaging. Mission.

Erica Mills Barnhart believes that EVERY organization that does good deserves to get noticed. They can—and should—have a consistently compelling way to describe their organization (mealy-mouthed mission statements be banned!). They also need to know which marketing trends to jump on and which ones to pass on. Through her speaking, teaching, and writing,

Erica helps with both.

Erica is the author of Pitchfalls: why bad pitches happen to good people and the Stanford Social Innovation Review article Good mission. Bad statement: why the social sector should worry about words, a top 10 read on ssir.org.

She is the creator of Claxon University, the Wordifier, an online tool that helps nonprofits amplify their words, the 1, 2, 3 Marketing Tree, a poster-sized tool that lets you easily create a marketing strategy, and the Claxon Method.

Erica speaks about marketing trends, elevator pitches, leadership, and how to put an end to communications chaos.

Erica is Camerican, born in Canada to American parents. She now lives in Seattle with her husband and two kids.
